How to layer serums, moisturiser and sunscreen correctly

You can own excellent products and still not see results if you apply them in the wrong order. Layering skincare correctly helps each product absorb properly, work the way it is meant to, and avoid cancelling out the one before it. The good news is that the logic behind layering is simple once you know the rule.

The golden rule: thinnest to thickest

As a general guide, apply your products from the lightest, most watery texture to the richest, heaviest one. Thin, water-based formulas need to reach the skin first; thicker creams and oils form a seal on top, so if you apply them too early they block everything that follows.

A step-by-step order that works

  1. Cleanser — start with a clean face so nothing traps dirt or oil underneath.
  2. Toner or essence (optional) — a watery hydrating layer that preps the skin.
  3. Water-based serums — lightweight treatments such as vitamin C, niacinamide or hyaluronic acid.
  4. Thicker treatments — heavier serums, retinoids or targeted creams.
  5. Moisturiser — locks in the layers below and supports your skin barrier.
  6. Sunscreen (mornings only) — always the final step of your daytime routine.

Why sunscreen always goes last

Sunscreen is designed to sit on the surface of the skin and form a protective shield. If you apply moisturiser or anything else over it, you disturb that film and reduce its protection. In the morning, sunscreen is the last thing you put on your face — and it should be reapplied through the day if you are outdoors.

Give each layer a moment

You do not need to wait ten minutes between every product, but allowing each layer 30 seconds to a minute to settle helps prevent pilling (those little rolls of product) and lets actives absorb. Use a small amount — a few drops of serum and a pea-sized to five-paise-sized amount of moisturiser is usually plenty.

The bottom line

Layer from thinnest to thickest, keep sunscreen for last in the morning, and introduce strong actives slowly and ideally at different times of day. Get the order right and your existing products will simply work better — no extra spending required. If you are unsure how to combine specific actives for your skin, a quick consultation can save you a lot of trial and error.
